BREATHTAKING BRIDGEWATER - 1612 Bridgewater Road, PORTLAND
Bridgewater Bay has undoubtedly one of Australia’s best beaches, a vast six kilometre arc of pristine, white sandy beach with towering cliffs. Home to the Portland surf lifesaving club, the bay has a unique beachfront cafe, which serves great coffee and delicious food and is fully licensed.
There are just a handful of homes overlooking Bridgewater, and not surprisingly, they don’t come onto the market all that often. This is one of the best, providing breathtaking ocean views from its tranquil setting of 39 acres or 15.87 hectares of secluded natural coastal bushland,
The 42 square house, designed by architect Robyn Shaw (Flannery&Shaw), is a stunning arrangement of interconnected pavilions, each crowned with pyramid-shaped ceilings which seem to float above the huge sheets of glass that form the walls of the building.
There are three separate and very generous living areas, three double bedrooms, two bathrooms and powder room, as well as the main bedroom suite which overlooks the sandstone-trimmed 22-metre saltwater lap pool and the sea beyond.
The largest pavilion – some 100 square metres – is the formal entertainment area, with absolutely stunning views across Bridgewater Bay and out across the southern ocean. The six metre high ceiling pyramid centre gives unique character and an extremely open feel. But the room is also warm and inviting, helped in part by the large jetmaster fireplace which is framed with a four metre long 150mm thick solid granite mantle and hearth. For convenience the home also has reverse cycle ducted central heating.
The main bedroom suite bathroom is situated on the north west corner of the pavilion giving a commanding elevated view of the pool and surrounding bay, featuring a large shower surrounded by glass highlighting views over an established hidden garden and across the rolling hills to the north. Generous space underneath allows a large climate-controlled cellar and storage room or another bedroom or office.
As befits a house with such a seaside aspect, the kitchen hub of the home conveys the feeling of being on the bridge of a ship, with the ocean seemingly spread out just beyond the main preparation area. The large island bench, triple pantry and full kit of stainless steel appliances will also suit any budding chef.
Boats can be launched off the beach at Bridgewater, so the property has a boatshed large enough to accommodate a decent sized craft and a four wheel drive. With fishing just minutes away, the convenience is hard to beat, especially when you can bring your fresh flathead or whiting back to the BBQ and enjoy it on one of the four decks around the home.
A four car garage shelters the vegetable plots and surrounding gardens at the home’s entrance.
